‘I don’t know the answer to that question’: a corpus-assisted discourse analysis of White House Press Briefings
2013
White House Press Briefings, daily meetings with the press held by the White House Press Secretary, are the main information conduit for the White House (Kumar 2007). They are considered a “political chess game” where the Press Secretary and the press face a “wrestling match” (Partington 2006: 16). Our analysis is carried out on a corpus comprising all the Press Briefings across three presidencies from Clinton to Obama. The additional mark-up includes information about individual speakers and their role, allowing us to compare different discourse strategies adopted by the participants in the briefings at different points in time. This leads us to determine the extent of the differences in t…
Selective Stepwise Suzuki Cross-Coupling Reaction for the Modelling of Photosynthetic Donor−Acceptor Systems
2009
A Suzuki reaction performed as a selective stepwise substitution of two boryl groups on a diarylporphyrin precursor is reported for straightforward construction of a porphyrin trimer, modeling photosynthetic donor-acceptor systems.
FACELIFT FOR A NEW PORT AREA IMAGE: THE CASE OF PALERMO
2012
The renewal of the urban look (Urban Facelift), starting from the harbor zones, could play a crucial role for the development of the whole city. This study will analyze the case of Palermo port area, considered as the “face” of the city. Sicily is indeed an island, therefore, because of its natural and infrastructural features, the sea is still the privileged connection with the world. For this reason, the urban renovation in the city of Palermo has begun just with its coast area. The tested methodology will combine the Urban Faces with the present state evaluation criteria by involving different stakeholders. After that, the Urban Faces will be associated with possible and suitable future …

Some years ago an improved design (the "complete design") was proposed to assess the composite face effect in terms of a congruency effect, defined as the performance difference for congruent and incongruent target to no-target relationships (Cheung et al., 2008). In a recent paper Rossion(2013) questioned whether the congruency effect was a valid hallmark of perceptual integration, because it may contain confounds with face-unspecific interference effects. Here we argue that the complete design is well-balanced and allows one to separate face-specific from face-unspecific effects. We used the complete design for a same/different composite stimulus matching task with face and non-face objec…
Dysmorphic face, precociously senile appearance, microcephaly, growth retardation and neuropsychomotor delay
2005
Cockayne's syndrome is a rare recessive autosomal disorder. Its frequency at birth is very low. In the classical form (type 1) the clinical appearance becomes evident by the second year of life. Itis characterized by severe growth delay, microcephaly, progressive loss of adipose tissue, senile appearance, dysmorphic facial features, ocular anomalies (retinal pigmentary degeneration, nistagmus, cataract, optic atrophy).
Photoactivity of shape-controlled TiO2 in gas-solid regime under solar irradiation
2019
Abstract Differently shape-controlled anatase TiO2 materials were tested as photocatalysts under both simulated and natural solar irradiation. Their photocatalytic activity in 2-propanol and propene partial oxidation and in the complete mineralization of acetaldehyde appears to increase with decreasing the shape control of the TiO2 material. This insight seems to be related to the residual presence of the templating species (fluoride anions) employed during the preparation of the shape-controlled TiO2 materials. In fact, the calcination of the powders, leading to levelling of the fluoride ions content, but also to a remarkable surface area decrease, gave rise to an increase of photocatalyti…

The Challenges of the European Anorectal Malformations-Net Registry
2015
Item does not contain fulltext Anorectal malformations (ARM) have a low prevalence, patients need specialized surgical care, and in many cases, patients born with ARM even need life-long aftercare. Due to its low prevalence most patients are still treated in low-volume pediatric surgical centers without any adequate monitoring of the outcome. Data on prevalence, comparison of different surgical techniques, and prospective outcome measurements are still scarce and difficult to interpret. In 2010, a consortium was founded (ARM-Net consortium) including several European pediatric surgical centers to collaborate more in research and share knowledge on ARM. One of the structures started by the c…
